Erebus Motorsport’s David Reynolds has scored another good bag of points at Townsville with sixth today, while his teammate Anton De Pasquale made a solid recovery to 18th.
In similar fashion to Darwin last month, David pounced from fourth past Rick Kelly and Jamie Whincup to move into second by Turn 1. The #9 Holden tussled for the lead but Shane van Gisbergen wouldn’t budge and David settled into second at Turn 2.
Behind them, Michael Caruso and Richie Stanaway were sent for a spin, Anton having to duck and weave to get by. With much precision, he accelerated up five spots to P21 before the end of the opening lap.
With 70-laps and two pit stops still to play out, both Erebus Penrite Racing drivers pushed on. David battled with Whincup for a number of laps before the #1 Holden sized up David and made a move to regain his original position, pushing David back to third.
Both Holden’s re-joined the pack after smooth pit stops on lap 20 and 22, with David now P4 and Anton P19. With a fresh set of rubber underneath him, David put pressure on Scott McLaughlin in a battle for third, as the Ford driver started to slip back. Pushing his Penrite Holden to the limits, David came under pressure from Craig Lowndes who also joined the podium hunt, passing David at turn 3.
With different strategies to play out it wasn’t until lap 50 when the second round of stops were made that the order was made clear. It didn’t work out in track position for David who emerged in effective fifth, dropping back in behind Lowndes. Anton was the last in the lane, surfacing in P21.
The #99 driver made some moves and was right behind Michael Caruso when the Nissan driver made a mistake and had a slide, Anton tried to pass going into the next and as he did Caruso ran wide and found the tyre barrier. The Safety Car was immediately deployed and when racing resumed with five laps to go, Anton moved up to 18thbefore the checkered flag was waved.
David exchanged blows with Mostert right until the end, but battling a failed suspension component, the Bathurst champ did a sensational job to only lose the one spot and drop down to sixth before the finish line.
DAVID REYNOLDS: Started 4th, Finished 6th
“I got a good start and had good pace in the first few laps but my pace started to fade and the cars in front were really fast and had very good tyre life, so it was hard to compete. My car didn’t feel right though, it wasn’t acting as normal so we’ll fix that and ensure we move forward in the next one.”
ANTON DE PASQUALE: Started 26th, Finished 18th
“I made a mistake in qualifying which cost us, I think we would have had a good start position if it wasn’t for that. When you start from last though you’re in for a hard day. Our race strategy was ok but we lacked a pace in some parts. To come home in a decent position though and ahead of where we started is a positive. We definitely improved from yesterday, we just need to look at it some more and ensure we keep pushing forward.”
