Fans will have the opportunity to appear on Reef McCarthy’s Super3 Falcon, as part of a new initiative run by the Erebus Motorsport Racing Army.
Erebus Academy’s newest recruit joined the junior driver academy in June and is now receiving extended support from the squad’s online fan group.
Prompted by McCarthy’s online search for a naming rights sponsor for the Bathurst 1000, Erebus Motorsport Racing Army admins Rowan Measday and Lisa Pears are using their Facebook community of almost 7,000 fans to financially assist the young driver.
Working alongside McCarthy and his father, the pair have created a GoFundMe page for McCarthy with all donors’ names to feature on the bonnet of his #61 Falcon for the remainder of the year.
“The Erebus Racing Army is a great little community and they’re really rallying behind me to try and make sure I get to every race this year,” he said.
“It’s awesome that the members don’t just support the main game drivers, they also support the potential future drivers of the team.
“I am so grateful to them all for supporting me; we haven’t been able to get much funding this year, so this sort of support is super important.”
After struggling to obtain enough financial backing in their rookie Super3 season, McCarthy and his father, Scott, are humbled by the support of not only the Erebus Academy but its generous supporter group.
“Everyone involved with Erebus have been so generous and so supportive. We really are overwhelmed by how incredible the team is,” Reef’s father, Scott McCarthy said.
“It’s very exciting that the Erebus Motorsport Racing Army are putting together this GoFundMe campaign for Reef to help raise some funds for the remainder of the season.”
“This is a really big deal for us, and we hope to reward everyone that’s supporting us with some results in the back half of the year.”
McCarthy claimed his first Super3 podium on the first Saturday of the Townsville double-header in July and backed it up with another podium on Sunday and two more the following weekend.
To help incentivise donors, Erebus Motorsport has offered a major prize to one lucky donor who will receive a hot lap with McCarthy in one of the team’s Holden Supercars. Every $5.00 donated will equate to one entry.
With three rounds remaining this year, McCarthy will resume the season at Winton on October 2-3.
