Erebus Motorsport’s Will Brown has secured his second career podium in a thrilling tale of teamwork at Sydney Motorsport Park today. It was a superb group effort with Brodie Kostecki also rounding out the top five.
At lights out, Brodie got the better start of the pair from P7 and snuck up behind his teammate who started P5.
The race was fairly uneventful until the team took their compulsory pit stops from lap 14. Brodie was the first to stop for four tyres, before Will came in the next lap for his full set of rubber.
It wasn’t long after that the Safety Car was deployed when Bryce Fullwood stopped on track. Brodie now P10 and Will P12 under yellow conditions. With the field now bunched and only two drivers in front on fresher rubber, both Brodie and Will were looking to use their big tyre advantage.
Racing resumed with 12 laps to go and both Erebus drivers made their way up three spots each in as little as two laps and were not showing any signs of slowing down. Brodie quickly got by Chaz Mostert for 5th as the #99 driver also set his fastest lap of the race. He then ticked another one off as his teammate followed him through, Will now up to P7.
With six laps to go both drivers had made their way safely inside the top five and had built a large gap to those behind. Brodie was right under the wing of Jamie Whincup and was trying to find the right moment to make a pass for the last spot of the podium. Unable to get it done though, Brodie opened the door at the hairpin for Will to have a crack at Whincup.
The #9 Commodore was lapping half a second quicker and with three laps left to run got by Whincup for a podium spot, meanwhile Brodie finished P5.
Racing resumes tomorrow with another two qualifying session and two 32-lap races from 11:45am local time.
