Boost Mobile Racing’s Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki capitalised on their super-soft tyre pace to finish just outside the top ten in today’s opening race in Townsville.
Like the majority of the field, Brodie and Will commenced the 88-lap race on hard tyres, racing from P15 and P18 respectively.
They got off to a great start and moved side by side through the opening complexes, later sliding by Jake Kostecki and Thomas Randle on lap three to move up the order.
Brodie was the first to blink for the first of two pit stops on lap 25, stopping for fresh hard tyres and a splash of fuel. Will stopped five laps later for the same, though the #9 Commodore took on slightly more fuel for a quicker stop later on.
The second round of stops came on lap 58, Brodie stopping again but this time for the faster, super-soft compound. With rising cabin temperatures, the team also used the longer fuel stop to remove Brodie’s window as a quick fix for some fresh air.
When the field cleansed seven laps later, Brodie and Will sat P13 and P15 respectively. The Erebus duo were quick to move though, taking advantage of their new rubber.
With three lap fresher tyres, Will continued to close the gap on his teammate who moved up to P11. With 11 laps remaining, Brodie pulled aside to let Will pass, with the Erebus drivers now sitting 11th and 12th where they remained until the checkered flag.
The team now look ahead to another qualifying session tomorrow morning, ahead of a second Top Ten Shootout and 250-kilometre mini marathon.
