Erebus Academy driver Jobe Stewart has secured his fifth podium of the Super3 season with a second place finish in Townsville this afternoon.
Meanwhile, difficulty arose for our Super2 drivers with Jay Hanson experiencing power steering issues and Jack Perkins #70 Commodore withdrawn from contention following severe damage.
Unfortunately for Jack, a swerving Brad Vaughan in qualifying saw his #70 Commodore slammed into the fence and unable to carry on. With the damage deemed beyond repair at the circuit, it ultimately ended his weekend.
On the other hand, the Image Racing duo saw positive qualifying results with Jay securing P7 despite a shortened session and Jobe claiming P2.
The opening lap immediately saw drama with Mason Kelly triggering the first and only Safety Car of the race that saw the field playing follow the leader for the first 10 minutes of the race.
Racing resumed with 27 minutes to go and Jay finally had the chance to make a move down the inside of Nash Morris and successfully claim P6.
Unfortunately, Jay’s gains were short lived with a power steering failure on lap 13 seeing the #49 Commodore enter the pits for repairs before returning to track two laps later and 12 positions down.
Jobe had a relatively uneventful race and managed to avoid any drama, running P2 all the way to the finish line. Meanwhile, Jay had managed to gain one lap and one position back before the flag was waved, crossing the line P17.
The Image Racing duo will hit the track tomorrow morning for Race 2 qualifying from 9.15AM, AEST.
