Erebus Motorsport driver Shae Davies will not take part in this afternoon’s 300-kilometre race, after a huge incident in qualifying at the Gold Coast 600.

Davies was on his first flying lap in the 20-minute session when he touched the wall at Turn 11, spearing him into the wall at 12.

“I was feeling really good before qualifying, probably the best I’ve felt in any session so I went out confident and it’s just hit me a little bit at Turn 11,” Davies said.

“It was such a small, insignificant touch on the left front, didn’t leave damage the car itself on that side, but it’s bounced me to the outside wall.

“It caught me by surprise, I thought the car was placed right but it just grabbed the wheel ever so slightly.

“A big price for a small mistake, it’s heartbreaking.”

The team’s General Manager of Motorsport Barry Ryan also commented on the incident.

“If it was life or death and we had to be out in the next few hours we would have had a big crack, but Supercars have said the damage is too extensive to get it back together in the time that we have got,” he said.

“It’s very disappointing for everyone but we do understand, so now we’ll focus on getting it ready for New Zealand.

“We’ve got all the equipment to fix it, we’ve got a plan to get straight into it Monday afternoon once the truck arrives back to Melbourne.”

In the short term, the team will put their focus on the Top Ten Shootout, with David Reynolds qualifying a provisional fourth.
