Erebus Motorsport’s Will Brown and Brodie Kostecki have just missed out on the team’s first double-podium as rain ruined their strong run in the dying stages of Race 28 at Sydney Motorsport Park tonight.
At the start, Brodie didn’t get the best start from fifth on the grid, although Will was quick off the line from P16.
With the longer races and potential rain making strategy even more important, it was all thrown into question when the Safety Car was deployed on lap 6. Both team Commodores fired into pit lane, Brodie from P12 and Will P17. With only 3-second separating the two cars it caused a double-stack in the lane, with Will opting to swap his hard compound tyre to super softs.
At the restart, Brodie had jumped to 6th, meanwhile a solid effort by the team meant Will still came out in P16. When racing resumed, it took only two laps for the last week’s winner to catch his teammate, as both drivers went around each side of David Reynolds.
They swapped spots on lap 12 and Will continued to use the softer rubber to his advantage, fighting his way to 3rd two laps later. Brodie settled into 7th for his middle stint as Will continued to lap quicker than anyone else on track, and eventually made it by Jack Le Brocq to secure P2 at the last corner on lap 28.
Brodie took his second stop at the end of lap 34, and this time it was his turn to swap onto softer rubber. Will held on for as long as he could until the super softs finally wore out, and pit on lap 38, this time back onto harder compound.
The Shaw and Partners Commodore sat effective 2nd as the field settled, while Brodie was just behind in P4. With ten laps remaining Brodie moved up another spot to grab the last place on the podium, although rain threatened what looked like a potential 1-2.
Things got slippery at the end and both drivers did their absolute best to try and hold on, though with only 3 laps remaining Will and Brodie both fell to P7 and P9 respectively.
Another qualifying kicks off tomorrow’s events from 10:50am local time, followed by a Top Ten Shootout and longer race in the afternoon.
