Image Racing’s Jordan Boys has gained valuable insight after completing his first wildcard at Winton Motor Raceway this weekend.
Race 14
Qualifying P26 for today’s first race, Jordan was quick off the line and progressed up to P24 by the end of the opening lap.
Lap 2 saw Jordan, Chris Pither and fellow wildcard Jayden Ojeda head three wide into turn three with contact sending the wildcards into the dirt and Jordan back to his original position.
Switching up his strategy from yesterday, Jordan came in for left-side tyres as soon as the pit window opened on lap 4 looking for an undercut.
Unfortunately, a big lock-up after the pit stop was damaging on his tyres and saw him go from P20 at his highest back to P25.
Lap 25 saw the field finally cleansed, Jordan continued to run P25 where he stayed until he crossed the line 11 laps later.
Race 15
Starting again from P26, Jordan got another great start and again worked his way up to P24 as the field jostled for position.
Initially, early pit stops seemed to be the theme with five cars immediately coming in for fresh tyres on lap 4, however the #49 Commodore stayed out until lap 16.
Coming in for fresh left-side tyres, Jordan re-joined P26 and continued to put down fast, clean laps, moving up to P24 after Jake Kostecki was turned by James Courney just after his re-entry.
The final laps continued to see drama with Jordan finding himself as high as P23 after Tim Slade and Courtney collided and ran off track on lap 25.
With fresher tyres, Macaulay Jones took advantage to pass Jordan which reverted him back to P25 where he ran until the checkered flag.
Satisfied with his first outing, Jordan now looks forward to returning to the Supercars grid in Tailem Bend, July 29 – 31.
Jordan Boys said: “Today’s first race didn’t really go to plan. We had a really good start but got into a bit of a bingle in the first couple of laps. We tried to undercut everyone by pitting early but a big lock up wrecked a tyre and that meant I just rolled around for the rest of the race. The second race saw another good start but I got stuck behind some cars so I decided to pit early. It was all going to plan but then I just fell off a bit towards the end but at the end of the day, I was happy with today’s final race. Tyre wear hurt us this weekend and I just wasn’t managing it as well as I’d hoped. I did a lot of learning this weekend and I enjoyed that but I definitely feel like we missed some opportunities to get results so there’s a little bit of disappointment but there are still plenty of positives to take away. Between now and Tailem Bend, I’ll be doing a test at the track and continuing to work with the Super2 guys at Image but not much racing at this stage. There’s some technique that I need to work on to get the most out of these cars. I understand what I need to change so now it’s just about actually implementing it and getting my head around it and I have some time to go away and think about it. Having not driven for a while, it was a little bit hard for me to jump in cold and be competitive straight away so hopefully some more seat time will help me adapt to these cars.”
