Erebus Academy driver Jay Hanson has secured his career best Super2 result during his Townsville debut, while teammate Jaylyn Robotham was not met with the same fortune.
Having qualified 9th and 7th respectively, Hanson was pleased to be showing consistent top 10 pace and was intent on maximising his position.
After maintaining his qualifying position throughout Saturday’s race, Hanson’s determination was on full-display on Sunday as he battled his way into the top fiv, securing 4th position by the final lap.
“The highlight of my weekend was definitely that last race, I had some really good battles and gained three positions which I definitely can’t complain about,” Hanson said.
“It’s always good to be moving forward and it was great to see the progression in my driving and in the car set up across the weekend.
“It was my first time here in Townsville and it’s a really cool track, I love being up close to the walls and it’s great to tick a street circuit off my Supercar bucket list.”
Unfortunately, it was a different story for his teammate Robotham.
After a starter motor failure on the grid of the opening race, Robotham was forced to give up his 4th place qualifying position for a pit lane start resulting in a P15 finish.
The trouble didn’t stop there and after gaining five positions in the opening lap of race 2, Robotham was left with a DNF after being rammed during a safety car resulting in a severely damaged rear wing.
“We knew we had speed this weekend and I felt like I was getting a lot out of the car,” Robotham said.
“I didn’t get to maximise my qualifying positions but I also couldn’t really do anything about the issues in my races.
“I felt really comfortable in the car all weekend and felt good on the track so it’s frustrating knowing we had the pace to see some really good results.”
The Image Racing duo will be back on track for the Sandown SuperSprint, August 19 – 21.
